Wotus interested in Pirates managerial job

One of the benefits to being on the road covering the playoffs for all of October is that you get to meet all sorts of people in the baseball world whose path you don’t often cross during the regular season. One of the downsides is that hotel smell that invariably infiltrates your clothes, but we won’t go there. Anyways…

I’ve been helping with MLB.com’s coverage of the Giants-Braves NLDS and in the process was introduced to Giants bench coach Ron Wotus. Pirates fans might remember Wotus from his brief appearances with the club in 1983 and 1984. He was drafted by Pittsburgh in the 16th round of the 1979 Draft.

While talking with Wotus, he expressed his desire to be a Major League manager and cited Pittsburgh as a place he would love to return to. As of our latest conversation, Wotus had not yet received a call from anyone in the Pirates’ front office, but he said he would jump at the opportunity to interview if given a chance.

Wotus has spent the last 22 years with the Giants, the last 12 coming on the Major League staff. He also managed for seven seasons in the Minors, with his clubs finishing above .500 in all but one season.

He’s been interviewed for Major League managerial jobs before, and in talking to others about Wotus, he is great in working with young players. Wotus still has family in Western Pennsylvania, which obviously increases the appeal of the Pirates’ opening.

As a huge Giants fan, I have been a fan of Ron Wotus for a while. He’s been great as the Giants bench coach! So great that he’s been in that job since the Dusty Baker days and was kept on, first by Felipe Alou and then by current skipper Bruce Bochy.

I’ve been hurting for Pirates fans over the years, and had high hopes that Mark Cuban would have bought the team and returned that franchise to its winning roots. Alas, twas not to be.

I hope that the Pirates ownership is smart enough to at LEAST interview Wotus. He deserves a crack at being an MLB manager. I was hoping he would be the heir apparent to Bochy, but if someone else gives him a shot, Giants fans everywhere will wish him well.
