Grichuk finally sent down to AAA.
As for pitching? They might bring up both Reyes AND Luke Weaver from the minors very soon. At least the Birds are off to a decent start with 4 in the 1st inning. But that may not be enuf’ of a head-start.

They need to intentionally walk Votto.

We go 10-5 since the All-Star game. The Cubs went 7-8. We pick up 3 games out of 15 played. Then pee the gain away in 3 games. Back to a 9 game lead. It just drives you nuts watching them fight for 15 games only to blow it in 3. Up 5-2 tonight and on the brink of blowing that too.

Today, Dodger’s put Kershaw on 60-day DL, possibly limiting their chance to grab a WC slot?
Again, the Cards’ base running was terrible. Isn’t it obvious? MM has GOT to quit telling the guys to be uber aggressive when it comes to that. Ugh.

Interesting take on ‘Redbirds Rants’ about Mo’s lack of deals. Now, it is from the Cardinal side of things, but it does make some excellent points about the players that did move and why they didn’t fit for us. Most of the players are free agents at the end of the year. Duke has another year of control, free agent at the end of next year.

To Haley’s base running point, I give up. Ron Darling said it best when the Cards played them a while back. The way the Cards play now, is not the “Cardinal way” he was use to seeing. Base running and defense were the main points he stressed. The fear of making a mistake that the Cards would be all over has passed, at least for now.
This from an outsider who has played against the Cards and has seen first hand what they use to do to teams that made mistakes. SAD.

2 of 3 L’s to the Reds……..pathetic!

Yep….even sans Jay Bruce.

Carp back, starting at 2B tonite. Hazelbaker in CF. Read a rumor that if the Birds decide to bring up some pitching help from AAA? It may be Luke Weaver instead of Reyes.

Wonder why? Reyes deserves a shot. Hate to read between lines, but maybe he’s not ready emotionally?
We need to sweep the Braves.

Basically it’s just the math. Luke Weaver’ stats are better than Reyes’. The emotional thing may have sumpin’ to do with it too, tho’.
Pre-game, they said Lyons will be out for at least 4 more weeks. Rosenthal just recently given a “shot” to treat his arm/shoulder issue. So they’ll wait a week, then let him throw a little to see how he does…and go from there.
This game tonite, shouldn’t have been as close as it was. Pitching was terrific…but the bats were cold. Brrrrr.

I don’t get why the Braves took on Kemp and his contract? I thought they were in rebuilding/dumping salaries mode?
Can’t count on Rosenthal or Lyons anymore this season, even if Lyons is back by Sept. Bull pen must be set for the playoffs by then. No time to work someone back into the mix. If it goes that way it may signal that Lyons is done with us and will be moved in the off season.

I agree. I think the writing’s on the wall. At least as far as Lyons is concerned. However Sept 1st, a mere 3 weeks away…is when.the MLB rosters expand from 25 to 40. So my guess is that they may be able to use a “lefty specialist” & won’t trade him until the off-season. Rosie may remain on the DL for a while yet, to give MO & MM time to figure out their plan for him.
And yeah, I wondered about the Kemp trade, too. Here’s a Sports Illustrated article that sums it up pretty well:

Update on Lyons. On crutches for the next 4 weeks, at least. Seeing 2nd specialist this Monday.

Good grief, how can they lose so badly to a declining team like Atlanta. we are definitely in decline. A few players worth building with but a revamp is overdue now.

Totally agree with Bob. The problem is the longer we hold on to them the less they’re worth. The way Holiday is playing they might sign him on a one year deal. The trouble is he can’t play the field anymore………..AL – DH is his spot now. This year he would have brought in a lot. Next year, who knows, he could fall off the map.
Adams and Moss would have brought in prospects too. Then move Perralta, Molina and /or Carp to 1B. There hasn’t been a consistent line up all year,so what could happen worst than losing 2 of 3 to the Reds and as of now 2 of 3 to the Braves.
Remember last week when we were 6 games back. That will be the high water mark this year I’m afraid

Holliday’s a moot point. His 7-yr/$120M contract included a “no trade” clause. Besides, on more than one occasion, “Holly” has commented that he wants to retire as a Cardinal. Here’s his contract info:
Overall, it seems that pitching’s been the Cards’ primary downfall. The starting rotation has been spotty. Also, awhile back….there were several games within reach, that Rosenthal tried to close but botched.
Early on, there were some infield errors being committed too. But Diaz & GGarcia have since improved in that regard. Let’s not forget how sucky the base-running’s been. (Not sure if that’s the player’s fault, or management’s. Or maybe half & half?)
And now with Diaz on the DL? The Birds are missing an unexpectedly huge piece of their puzzle.
Maybe your prediction was on target, Dave. 86 +/- wins if we’re lucky?
Incidentally, MM said he took out Carp last nite ’cause his swings just didn’t look right.
