May 25: Cardinals (27-22) @ Reds (22-25)
The Cardinals’ brief jaunt to Cincinnati ends today, with yet another Sunday night game on ESPN. This is the third time in a four-week span that the Cardinals have been chosen for that national telecast.
Adam Wainwright has a chance to become the National League’s first eight-game winner and send the Cardinals to a fourth consecutive series win. The club enters tonight having won eight of its past 10. A victory in this series finale would push the Cardinals to a season-best six games above .500.
Yadier Molina gets the night off tonight; manager Mike Matheny will explain why later this afternoon. Perhaps it is just to set him up to start all three of the upcoming games against the Yankees. This will be Tony Cruz’s first start behind the plate with Wainwright on the mound since Molina was on the DL last summer (July 31 and August 5). He has caught six of Wainwright’s starts; the Cardinals have won two of those games.
Jon Jay is also in the lineup, an indication that Peter Bourjos is still battling a stomach virus.
