March 23 Q of the Day
What is projected for Xavier Scruggs after this spring? He has been terrific both at the plate and especially in the field at first base.
— Claudia G.
Scruggs is set to open the season as the starting first baseman in Triple-A. It’s a well-deserved promotion for the 26-year-old, who has spent the last two full season in Double-A. He has benefited from the Cardinals not having many first basemen in camp and therefore has gotten a longer look by the Major League coaching staff than several of the other minor league players.
Manager Mike Matheny had this to say about Scruggs on Saturday: “Scruggs did a nice job. He came in completely different shape, which makes you look at him a little different. I see him as somebody who can help us out. He’s taking very good at-bats, too. Before where we might have seen a lot of all-or-nothing, I think he’s given us a different look. He’ll take a walk. He’s aggressive in his zone, but not just flailing. He had a plan.”
