March 15: Q of the Day

What are the chances we see the Tyrell Jenkins making his Major League debut this season? I could easily see in two years the Cards rotation being Adam Wainwright, Michael Wacha, Shelby Miller, Carlos Martinez and Jenkins and the Cardinals dealing Jaime Garcia, Joe Kelly and Lance Lynn for other pieces. Your thoughts?

Jenkins will not be Major League ready this season, and it’s a stretch to expect him to be rotation-ready in 2015 either. He is wrapping up his recovery from August shoulder surgery and was limited to 13 games last season because of shoulder issues. This season is all about getting healthy and staying healthy for Jenkins; It’s not about breaking into the Majors. He has pitched in only three games above the low-A level so far.

Fortunately for the Cardinals, Jenkins is just 21 years old and has plenty of time to still rise through the system. The injuries were a setback, but Jenkins certainly remains on the organization radar.

Also, there is no way the Cardinals deplete their depth by dealing three established Major League starters within the next 12 months. One, that would leave the Cardinals thin on pitching (never a good thing). And two, what glaring needs do they need to address? They’ve got a surplus of outfielders, a third baseman who is signed through 2020, a shortstop signed for four years, a future Hall of Fame catcher in place and a pair of pretty good options at first. Sure, needs may arise. But they won’t be so widespread to cost the Cardinals three good arms.
