August 15: Pirates (71-48) @ Cardinals (68-51)

Jenifer Langosch/

The Cardinals, 4-8 against the Pirates this season, need a win today in order to take the series and avoid falling four games back in the division. They get a boost with the return of Yadier Molina, who comes off the disabled list today. Shane Robinson does as well, which gives the Cardinals another right-handed bat off the bench.

Molina is starting and batting fifth today, but the Cardinals said they have a plan in place to schedule in days of rest for Molina. When Molina gets time off, it will be Rob Johnson taking his place behind the plate. Tony Cruz is out of the picture for at least 15 days after needing to go on the DL with a left forearm stress fracture. Cruz said his arm has been sore for about a month, and an MRI taken on Monday revealed the microfracture. Cruz risked a more serious break, he said, by continuing to play. The issue affected him primarily on his swing.

The other roster move was expected — Jermaine Curtis returned to Triple-A Memphis after a two-day stint in St. Louis. Much more on all this news in the notebook later this afternoon.
