July 27: Cardinals (62-38) @ Braves (58-45)

Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com

The Cardinals opened a key 10-day, 11-game road trip with a loss on Friday that had as much to do with Mike Minor as it did with anything (or anyone) else. The game story is here, for anyone who may have missed it online.

Joe Kelly returns to the mound on Saturday for the first time since July 12. Inconsistent use has defined his season, though Kelly has come through it pitching pretty well. In his last start — which actually came on normal rest — Kelly scattered three hits and allowed one earned run in 5 1/3 innings. He’s thrown 80 pitches just once this season, but has finished with a pitch count in the 70s in each of his last four appearances (two starts, two relief outings).

Also, Matt Holliday returns to the Cardinals’ lineup today after a 15-day stay on the disabled list. Losing his place on the roster is Brock Peterson, who was optioned to Triple-A.
