June 1 (Game 2): Giants (29-26) @ Cardinals (36-18)

The Cardinals defeated the Giants, 8-0, in Game 1 of today’s split-doubleheader (recap here). They also set themselves up well with the way they did it. By getting seven innings from Shelby Miller, the Cardinals were able to avoid dipping too deep into their bullpen. Victor Marte and Keith Butler each pitched a scoreless inning, leaving manager Mike Matheny with his best five relievers fresh and ready for tonight.

The lack of any suspense late also allowed Matheny to give David Freese, Carlos Beltran and Yadier Molina the full game off. All three are in the lineup for game two. The three Matts (Holliday, Carpenter and Adams), along with Allen Craig, are all on the bench. That means that all 13 of the Cardinals’ position players will have started one of these two games today.
