April 2: Cardinals (0-1) @ D-backs (1-0)

Lefty Jaime Garcia entered spring training amid questions about the durability of his shoulder. Weeks later, he departed not only having hushed those concerns but appearing more confident in his own belief that he is both healthy and capable of dominating. No one in this Cardinals’ rotation had a better spring than Garcia, who makes his season debut tonight.

Said manager Mike Matheny this afternoon: “I just love where he is all the way around. He set the tone early that he’s just going to go out and make pitches and not really go out and try to do anything more or less than he does on a daily basis. He’s been keeping things simple mechanically. He’s been keeping things simple in his thought processes and how he’s translating those. It’s a good place for him to be and certainly a good start. But spring is spring and now we get to go for real.”

It will be intriguing A) to see if Garcia can carry over all that was going right in March and B) if he can begin to dissolve the disparity he’s had over his career in his home vs. road results.

The Cardinals will counter Arizona’s Trevor Cahill with the same lineup they used in the opener. First pitch is at 8:40 p.m. CT. Click here to go to the MLB.com game preview.
