Mozeliak, Matheny to have contracts extended

UPDATE: General manager John Mozaliak has been given a three-year extension that will keep him in his post through the 2016 season. Manager Mike Matheny had his 2014 club option exercised.

The Cardinals have scheduled a Thursday morning press conference to announce contract extensions for general manager John Mozeliak and manager Mike Matheny. The current contracts of both men were set to expire at the end of the 2013 season. Matheny’s current contract included a club option for 2014.

Mozeliak was hired as the Cardinals’ GM in October 2007 after working in the organization’s baseball operations department for several years. During Mozeliak’s six-year GM tenure, the Cardinals have advanced to the postseason three times and averaged 88 wins per season. Mozeliak inherited a club that won just 78 games in ’07.

The Cardinals have advanced to the League Championship Series each of the last two seasons and captured a World Series title in 2011.

Matheny, 42, took over as the club’s manager in 2012 and led the Cardinals to an 88-74 record in his first season. Despite having no previous managerial experience, Matheny brought St. Louis to within a win of a return trip of the World Series. He was the Majors’ youngest manager last season.
