August 2: Cardinals (56-48) @ Rockies (37-65)

Yadier Molina suffered a sprained right thumb in Wednesday’s win, and that ailment will keep him out tonight. Molina is available, manager Mike Matheny said, if there is a situation where Tony Cruz has to come out. But the Cardinals would rather let Molina have a full night off since his grip would be compromised by the thumb issue.

Molina is scheduled to have a X-ray done on his thumb in St. Louis tomorrow. He did not take batting practice today, though Molina did take three more at-bats after hurting his thumb on Wednesday.

With a right-hander starting for the Rockies today, the Cardinals’ lineup has additional changes for this series finale. Lance Berkman gets his first start Saturday, and Jon Jay moves into the two-hole with Allen Craig sitting. Also, it’s Skip Schumaker who draws the start at second base, where Tyler Greene was one night earlier.

Rafael Furcal is sitting again, despite lobbying to return to the field. The medical staff has cleared Furcal to play, but the Cardinals prefer to stay cautious and will wait to use Furcal after he sees the team doctor on Friday. Furcal has already had an MRI on his lower back, which has been stiff since last Friday.
