July: 23: Dodgers (52-44) @ Cardinals (50-45)

Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com

The Cardinals’ homestand continues now with four games against the Dodgers, who, like St. Louis, are currently within two games of a playoff spot. In fact, were the season to end today, the Cards and Dodgers would be the first two teams out of the National League playoff picture.

But, of course, 67 games remain on the Cardinals’ schedule, so postseason chatter is a bit premature. That said, it can only help the Cardinals to beat up on the Dodgers this week, as you never know if the two teams will be fighting it out for a wild card berth two months from now.

Los Angeles swept the Cardinals in a three-game series in May. Two of those Dodger victories came by one run. And because of an oddity in the schedule, the clubs meet four times this week and then another four times in Los Angeles in mid-September. That’s 11 games between non-division opponents.

David Freese sits tonight largely based on matchup. He is 0-for-6 against Dodger starter Chad Billingsley and has struck out in all of those at-bats. Allen Craig is out, too, and continues to rest a sore quad. Both players are, however, available if needed in-game.

I see the Indians are willing to trade Chris Perez. I think this trade makes since. What do you think?

I like it, but would like to see us pick up a lefty……we need middle relievers

What about Jason Vargas…..Seattle

Can Mike go with a more regular starting lineup; depending on opponents’ LH or RH starting pitching? July 21 lineup looked pretty good with the 12-0 resulting win.
Did you happen to pass my suggestion on to MM, Jenifer?
