June 19: Cardinals (34-33) @ Tigers (32-34)

Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com

This was one of those series that, over the winter, certainly caught my attention. And I’m guessing I wasn’t alone in that. Here you have the defending World Champions against a team that many predicted would supplant the Cards as champs this season. And yet, we are in mid-June, and both clubs are still looking for footing.

The Tigers trail the AL Central-leading White Sox by just 2.5 games, but they’re also two games under .500 and have been below that mark for over a month now. The Cardinals, after getting off to a hot start, have cooled considerably. Injuries haven’t helped, either, and the team enters this series trailing the Reds by 4.5 games.

If the season ended today, neither team would be in the playoffs.

But, of course, it doesn’t. And these two clubs each have enough talent to turn the year around. It’ll be interesting to see how these two under-achieving teams fare against each other over the next three days.

For daily news (and there is plenty), check out the notebook on cardinals.com tonight.

Nothing on Carson Kelly signing today? Second rounder with scholarship offers on the table is pretty big news. Top HS hitter out of the Northwest and deemed a first round talent. Nice job by Kastrovintz and the STL scouting dept. on being able to draft and sign the young man.

Kelly signed almost a week ago and we had a full story on the signing on cardinals.com: http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120615&content_id=33360176&vkey=news_stl&c_id=stl

Hmm, can’t believe I missed that…just saw the video posted on the Card’s website but didn’t hear of the date. Thanks Jenifer, I actively follow your blog and everything Cardinals despite moving to the baseball black hole known as San Diego. At least I have the weather and sunny beach!
