Pirates acquire catcher Michael McKenry

Addressing their need to add another catcher, the Pirates acquired Michael McKenry from the Red Sox for cash considerations or a player to be named later on Sunday night. McKenry, who has played in Triple-A all season, will team up with Dusty Brown to share the catching duties in Pittsburgh.
To make room for McKenry, 26, on the 40-man roster, the Pirates have designated Wyatt Toregas for assignment. Toregas’ stay with the Pirates lasted only four days.
McKenry’s Major League experience is limited to six games with the Rockies in 2010. He went 0-for-8 during that stint. McKenry, who was drafted by the Rockies in 2006, was in Colorado’s Minor League system while Clint Hurdle was managing the Rockies.
McKenry was dealt from Colorado to Boston on March 29 for pitcher Daniel Turpen and reported to Triple-A Pawtucket. There, the right-handed hitting catcher hit .280 in 28 games. Behind the plate, McKenry threw out five of 27 baserunners attempting to steal on him.
The Pirates’ need to add a catcher was prompted by recent injuries to Chris Snyder and Ryan Doumit. Snyder will not return for at least two months after having back surgery on Friday. Doumit, who is recovering from an ankle sprain, is expected to be out until at least late July. The Pirates are also without third string catcher Jason Jaramillo, who is dealing with elbow soreness.
