The Pirates announced on Tuesday that they have signed eight Latin American players. Here are those players, as well as a comment from Latin American scouting director Rene Gayo about each:

  • OF Yunior Aquiles; 16 years old, 6-foot-3, 185 pounds

“Yunior has a very athletic body with power potential. He projects to be a good defender in the future.”

  • LHP Cristian Henriquez; 18, 6-foot-0, 175 pounds

“Cristian is athletic and has a natural feel to pitch. He has a chance for an above-average changeup and curveball. He is from a very rural area in the Cibao Region and was seen by very few teams.”

  • RHP Yunior Montero; 16, 6-foot-4, 175 pounds

“Yunior has good sink to his fastball and a chance to have an above-average curveball and fastball velocity.”

  • LHP Melvin Rosario; 18, 6-foot-2, 175 pounds

“He is an outstanding athlete who has above-average arm action. Melvin has natural sink to his fastball and sink to his slider and will make the conversion from outfield to pitcher.”

  • OF Miguel De Aza; 17, 6-foot-0, 170 pounds

“Miguel is very athletic with an above-average arm. He also has the potential for speed and has a natural stroke with the ability to use the entire field.”

  • 2B Rodney Polonia; 17, 5-foot-10, 160 pounds

Rodney is the son of former big leaguer Luis Polonia. He is an instinctive and aggressive player who hits left-handed.”

  • RHP Isaac Sanchez; 17, 6-foot-2, 190 pounds

“Isaac is a live athletic right-handed pitcher with a power approach to pitch. He has a solid Major League-average to above-average fastball with an above-average rotation curveball that has power and bite.”

  • C Heriberto Figueroa; 21, 5-foot-11, 180 pounds

“Heriberto has well above-average overall instincts to play the game with above-average leadership skills. He has solid average Major League defensive tools with projection to Major League above-average in the future. His release time to second base is between 1.88-1.93. He is a line-drive hitter that uses the whole field. His defense and make-up are his main attributes, and he is a solid addition to our system.”

Sanchez and Figueroa are the only two of the group who will be playing in the Dominican Summer League this year. The other six players will be a part of the DSL beginning in 2011.
