Pittsburgh has put Luis Cruz on waivers, a baseball source confirmed on Saturday. This would mean that the Pirates are in the process of removing Cruz from the team’s 40-man roster.
The Pirates were expected to clear a roster spot in advance of Thursday’s Rule 5 Draft so that the club could make a selection with its second overall pick. Once Cruz comes off the 40-man roster that opening will be created.
If Cruz clears waivers, he can become a free agent since he has already been outrighted to the Minors once before. It is unknown whether there would be mutual interest in having Cruz re-sign with the organization with the chance to make the big-league club out of Spring Training.
Cruz hit .214 in 27 games with the Pirates last season. He made his Major League debut with Pittsburgh in 2008.
